Basic Care Tips for Air Plants
Having a plant is also a responsibility that we should happily handle. It is like you have a new child in the family where you need to give care and love for it to grow righteously. We know that plant has countless benefits; we should also know how to take good care of them.
Now, we will tackle the question: what do air plants need to make them live longer and grow better. Listed below are the five care tips that will surely help.
1. Sunlight is a must.
Yes, sunlight is not just for humans because air plants also need it. A minimum of four hours and a maximum of six hours of indirect sunlight daily is a necessity. Never put them in direct sunlight because the air plants’ foliage will burn.
But, if you have a silver-leafed kind of air plant, do not worry because it can survive in direct sunlight. Moreover, if it is not that sunny in your place, you can use artificial light. It will still help the air plants grow and remain healthy.
2. Water your air plants.
Aside from the sunlight, our plants also need water! Hydration is also a necessity for plants like any other organism. But, the question is, do you know how to water your air plants appropriately?
An air plant does not have any soil as it does not grow from it. So, to water an air plant, you will need a tub, sink or a bowl, water, and your air plant. Put your water in a tub or whatever container you have. Afterward, you need to put your air plant.
Watering your air plants should only be done at least once a week for 30 minutes. It is not like other plants that sometimes need to be watered frequently. The air plants prefer a hotter climate, too, so indoors usually works well. Of course, in warmer climates such as past zone 9, they might happily grow outdoors.
However, you can also make a mist for your air plants to avoid dehydration. Put water in your spray bottle or any container that can make your water appear like a mist. Afterward, give your air plants a little spray daily.
NOTE: Our schedule for our air plants is simple.
- We soak them a cool bath once a week for about 15-30 minutes. Sometimes they soak a little longer and they remain happy.
- About every other day, we mist them with a spray bottle. If the air feels extra dry, which is not usually a problem in Florida, we might mist them daily.
- Larger air plants vacation outdoors in partial shade during warmer months.
3. Keep them safe.
No one wants their air plants to be harmed. The scale insect is a pest that can cause severe damage to a plant. It is not that different from the mealybugs and causes problems when they invade.
Most air plants have soft leaves. That is one of the factors why they are so sensitive to insects. It can even make the leaves of the air plants fall apart. Keeping them pest-free is essential and thankfully not difficult.
Watch for them and at the first sign of problems, use a natural pesticide with Neem Oil.
If you don’t catch the problem early, you may still be able to save your precious plants. Remove badly infected leaves and discard. Now, wash all extra areas to remove any visible pests. Air dry, then spray with Neem Oil.
Continue to watch for pest’s return and treat as needed.
NOTE:
Healthy plants that receive proper care have fewer problems with pests and disease!
4. Monitor your air plant’s temperature.
Caring for Air Plants is widely known as a tropical plant. It can only survive in places where temperatures remain warm, usually zones 10 and above. Maintaining a plant’s temperature proves not only helpful but quite necessary.
Colder temperatures harm the plant. Too cold and they die quickly. They do, however, enjoy our home temperatures and reside alongside us as indoor plants.
Conversely, keeping them at a high degree of heat temperature increases their need for water to avoid being dehydrated. With the basics of proper care, you help your greenery live longer.
5. Use a bromeliad fertilizer.
To help your air plants remain healthy and grow faster, use bromeliad fertilizer. However, fertilize your air plants only once each month. In fact, offering fertilizer too often actually harms and may kill your plants. Once a month and your plants thrive!
Our favorite is:
NOTE:
The best way we have found to apply fertilizer is in their weekly soak. Simply add the liquid fertilizer to the bathwater and soak for at least 30 minutes. This allows your plants to look fresher and remain healthy.
6. Give TLC to your air plants.
Tender, love, and care (TLC) are the three necessary things we give our plants from our hearts. And so, we should make the air plants feel special. Let us make them feel welcome in our home.
You might be wondering why? Do plants have feelings? In fact, many experts believe that plants do have feelings. And, how we take care of them is reflected in how they grow.
We know plants are beneficial as they have numerous wondrous effects on us. Therefore, we should understand how to give back the good things that they made us feel. It is just like a give-and-take in a relationship. If you do not know how to take good care of your plants, do not expect they will live longer.
What air plants need is immensely simple and something that we can provide with little effort. Let us protect our air plants and keep them healthy and happy. We cannot deny the fact that air plants are beautiful and deserve to be loved
